Open the staff screen

The staff screen is the command center your team (staff, barbers, stylists) uses to run the line. It works in any web browser on a tablet, phone or computer, so there's nothing to install.

  1. On the Locations page, click "Open staff screen" on the tile for your location. The link ends in /s/your-slug/staff.
  2. Log in with your staff PIN (the 6 to 12 digit code for that location). Owners and managers can sign in with their own NextUp account instead of the PIN.
  3. Bookmark it on the device so staff can open it every day without going through the dashboard. On an iPhone or iPad, add it to the Home Screen for a full-screen, app-like experience.

The staff screen can't reach billing, team, branding or settings. A tablet at the front desk gives the best experience.

What staff can do on the staff screen (call, serve, no-show)

From the staff screen your team can:

  • Call the next person in line. Their name appears on the TV with a chime, and their phone shows it's their turn.
  • Seat or Serve them when they arrive, then tap Done when finished.
  • No-show a party that doesn't arrive after being called. They are removed from the line.
  • Back: put a party called by mistake back at their spot.
  • Call again to re-announce someone, after a short cooldown.
  • Ask if they're coming: their phone asks "Are you still coming?" and they answer 2, 5 or 10 minutes away, or that they can't make it. The answer shows on their row.
  • Add a walk-in or phone-in manually by name.
  • Open or close the location to stop new walk-ins joining.
  • Mark who's working today, and set "On this device" so the big Call button calls the next customer for one person.

Staff can also see intake answers, chosen services, customer photos, and things like loyalty stamps, gift card codes and package visits on each customer's entry.

What happens when a customer is called?

When staff press Call, the customer's name appears on the TV with a chime (and, on supported TVs, spoken aloud) along with the team member who's ready for them. The customer's own page on their phone shows it's their turn. Customers who joined in the NextUp app or allowed browser notifications get a notification.

Texts: when texting is active on your account, customers who gave a mobile number and opted in also get a "You're up" text. If they don't respond and staff press Call again, a second text goes out, and a phone call too if you turned on "Call customers who don't respond" in Location settings. NextUp's texting is still being switched on, so texts and calls may not be going out on your account yet.

If they still don't come up, staff can tap "Ask if they're coming" or mark them as a no-show, which removes them from the line so the next party can be called.

Set up the TV display in your waiting area

The TV display shows your live line on any screen: a wall TV, a monitor at the front, or a spare tablet in landscape. It shows who's being served ("Now with"), who's up next (first name and last initial), the current estimated wait, a QR code and short link customers can scan to join, the time, and optionally the weather.

How to open it:

  • On an Apple TV, open the NextUp app for Apple TV. It shows a code to enter under Connect a TV, with no link to type. It's the smoothest option.
  • In a web browser on a streaming stick, computer, or the TV itself, go to your location link followed by /tv (for example nextupwalkin.com/s/fresh-fades/tv), or click Open TV display on the dashboard. Or open nextupwalkin.com/tv and pair it with a code.

No login is needed and it stays on indefinitely. Turn off the screen saver and set the display to never sleep so it stays visible all day.

Connect a TV with a pairing code

Typing a long link with a TV remote is slow, so pair the TV with a short code instead:

  1. On an Apple TV, open the NextUp app. In a web browser on the TV or streaming stick, open nextupwalkin.com/tv.
  2. The TV shows a 6-character code (for example ABC-123).
  3. On your Locations page in the dashboard, find the Connect a TV card under Setup and Integrations. You can do this from your phone or a computer.
  4. Type the code from the TV and click Connect TV.
  5. The TV switches to your location's display and stays there.

The pairing is permanent. After connecting once, the TV always shows your location's line, even after it restarts, until you connect it to a different location. Codes are one-time use and expire after 15 minutes, so get a fresh one if it times out.

What TV hardware works with NextUp (Apple TV, Fire TV, Roku, Chromecast)

Any ordinary TV works; plug a small device into its HDMI port:

  • Best: an Apple TV 4K with the NextUp app. It runs natively, not in a browser, so motion is smoothest. Pick the model with an Ethernet port for a wired connection.
  • Good: a Google TV Streamer (open the display in Chrome).
  • Good: an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max, opening the display in the Amazon Silk browser.

What won't work today: Chromecast only mirrors a phone and freezes when that phone sleeps. Roku has no browser, so it can't show the display yet; a NextUp app for Roku is coming soon, and so is a Fire TV app. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select and the 2026 Fire TV Stick HD have no browser either. Until those apps are out, use one of the devices above.

Smart TV and commercial display built-in browsers can open the screen, but they're often years behind, so animations and layout can look wrong. A streaming device is better. See the Recommended Equipment page for specific models.

The TV went blank or restarted

The TV display link is permanent. Just reload the browser tab or go back to the link. On an Apple TV, open the NextUp app again. If you paired the TV with a code, the pairing is permanent and the TV reconnects automatically after it restarts.

If the TV keeps going dark, turn off the screen saver and set the TV or streaming device to never sleep. If the layout or animations look broken, you are probably using the TV's built-in browser; plug in an Apple TV or a streaming stick instead. NextUp needs an internet connection to stay live, so check the Wi-Fi or use a wired Ethernet connection where you can.

Show the weather on the TV

The TV display can show the current weather: the temperature now, the next few hours and tomorrow, from the US National Weather Service. To turn it on:

  1. Open Location settings for the location.
  2. Add your address (a US address is required) so NextUp knows where you are.
  3. Turn on "Show weather on the TV" and pick °F or °C.

The weather steps back while someone is being called. If the forecast is ever unavailable, the TV simply shows no weather. Weather is informational only.

Set up a door tablet (kiosk) at your entrance

The door tablet, or kiosk, lets walk-ins add themselves to the line the moment they arrive, without scanning anything.

  1. Get any iPad or Android tablet.
  2. Open the door tablet link from the Locations page (it ends in /s/your-slug/kiosk).
  3. Lock the tablet to that one screen: turn on Guided Access on an iPad, or Screen Pinning on Android, with a passcode only staff know.
  4. Set the tablet's auto-lock or screen timeout to never, and mount or stand it by your entrance at eye level, in portrait.

Customers see a simple "Join the line" form. They type their name (and answer any intake questions or pick services). After joining they see a confirmation with their position, estimated wait and a QR code to take their spot with them on their phone; the screen then resets for the next person. The kiosk never saves or pre-fills one customer's details for the next.

Download and print your QR code

Your QR code is the fastest way for customers to join the line. They scan it with their phone camera; no app is needed.

  1. In the Help Center's QR code section, or from your location on the Locations page, click Download PNG. It's a high-resolution 1200 by 1200 pixel image you can print at any size.
  2. Print it at full size.
  3. Put it where customers look first: your front window, counter or mirrors.

Placement tips: eye level works best, make sure there's enough light, and laminate it near sinks or wet surfaces. Each location has its own unique QR code.

If you change your location's link later, old QR codes keep working: they automatically forward to the new link. Print new ones when you can, but nothing breaks in the meantime.

Share your queue status page (live wait link)

Your queue status page is a public, shareable page showing your current wait time and line length. No sign-in is needed to view it. Its address is nextupwalkin.com/s/your-slug.

  • Post the link, or a QR code of it, on your Google Business Profile, Instagram bio or website.
  • Customers check it before leaving home; if the wait is short, they head over.
  • They can join the line right from this page without scanning a code.

Find it on the Locations page: click Open status page on any screen tile, or copy the join link from the footer of the location card. The Get Found page in the dashboard also has guidance for Instagram and Google, the link to copy and the QR code.
