Does NextUp work with my POS or card reader?
No. NextUp does not integrate with any point-of-sale (POS) system, such as Square, Clover, Toast, Shopify POS or Lightspeed, or with a card reader or Tap to Pay. It is not a POS. Services your customers pay for in person stay with whatever you use today (your register, card reader or cash), and NextUp does not process them or charge any fee on them.
What NextUp can take online, through your own connected Stripe account, is: tips from the customer's status page, appointment deposits and no-show fees, packages, memberships, booth rent, and, on the Restaurant plan, table bills. NextUp takes no cut of these; Stripe's processing fee is passed through at cost.
If you need queue events in another system, NextUp offers webhooks and API keys, but there is no ready-made POS connection.

Connect Stripe to take tips, deposits and memberships (Payouts)
To take payments online, connect your business's own Stripe account on the Payouts page. Customer payments (tips, deposits, no-show fees, packages, memberships, table bills) are sent to your Stripe account, less Stripe's fee. Setup takes about five minutes: your business details and a bank account. You can also do it from the setup wizard's payments step.
On the Payouts page you then choose which online payment types to turn on, and how your team is paid: the business collects everything, tips go to staff, booth rent, or suite rental, with per-person overrides. Each location can follow its own setup and even be paid into its own Stripe account.
Online payments depend on Stripe being available for your account; if the Payouts step isn't offered, it isn't available yet.
How tips and payouts reach my team
Each team member can connect their own bank through Stripe, from their book (their own sign-in) or from a setup link you text or email them. You can invite everyone at once and see a checklist of who is connected. Payments taken before someone's account is ready are held and sent automatically once it is.
Tips paid online can go straight to the person, and renters also receive their own deposits and no-show fees. You choose who pays Stripe's fee on tips (taken from the tip, or covered by the business). You can send a percentage of someone's tips or service payments to their assistant. Refunds and disputes reverse the transfer automatically.
For safety, if a team member's bank account is in a name that isn't theirs, payments are held until an owner confirms it. The payout ledger exports to CSV or Excel for your books.
Stripe processing fees (what each payment costs)
NextUp's subscription is the only thing NextUp charges; it takes $0 from any payment. Stripe's standard US fees are passed through at cost:
- Card payments (tips, deposits, no-show fees, packages, memberships, table bills, rent): Stripe's card fee comes out of the payment. On tips you choose whether the tip or the business pays it. Cards issued outside the US cost a little more.
- Rent paid from a US bank account: a lower, capped fee.
- Rent taken from a renter's payouts: no fee.
- Sending money to your team's banks: Stripe's Connect fees, 2 dollars a month per person paid plus 0.25% and 25 cents per payout, billed monthly at cost. You choose whether the business or each person pays them.
- Refunds: Stripe keeps the original fee. Disputes (chargebacks) carry a Stripe dispute fee, paid by the business.
See the processing fees table on the pricing page for the current rates and worked examples.

Collect booth rent or suite rent
NextUp can collect booth rent or suite rental from renters weekly, every two weeks, or monthly. Set it up per renter on the Payouts page.
Rent is taken from the renter's payouts first (what their customers paid them online), then from a card or US bank account the renter saves. On the due date you choose what happens to anything still owed: charge it, carry it over, waive it, or mark it paid another way. There's also a "pay now" option. Renters get reminders and receipts, and you hear about any payment that fails. Commission, booth rent and suite rental can sit side by side in the same shop.
Commissions report (what each person earned)
The Commissions page tracks what each team member earned. Set a rate per person: a percentage or a flat amount, with tiers if the rate changes after a revenue threshold. You can also set rates per service.
At the end of a pay period, pick a date range and run the report. It shows each person's revenue, tips and commission owed, from completed visits that had a price; no-shows and removed check-ins are excluded. Each person also sees their own earnings on their book, and statements per person and period export to CSV or Excel.
Payroll export (Gusto, ADP, QuickBooks)
The Payroll page prepares each pay period's numbers for your payroll provider: each person's hours (from the time clock), commission (from the Commissions page rates), and tips paid through NextUp, plus cash tips and cash advances to take back.
Pick your provider once: Gusto, RUN Powered by ADP, ADP Workforce Now, QuickBooks Payroll, or another. Set each person's payroll ID, then download the provider's import file, a plain spreadsheet, or an Excel summary with hours by day. Before you run payroll, NextUp checks for missing codes or IDs, open shifts, shifts to check, tips not sent yet, and people who left. NextUp does not run payroll itself; it gives you the files.
Tip pools (share tips across the team)
The Tip Pools page shares a location's tips across the team each period: weekly, every two weeks, twice a month, or monthly. Shares can be split by hours worked (from the time clock), equally, or by points. Pools are for staff; owners and managers aren't in them.
Tips are held while the period runs. When it ends, the owner reviews the shares (and can leave someone out), then pays out, or it's paid out automatically three days later. Each share goes to the person's bank (if their tips are paid directly) or to the business for payroll.
Cash tips, cash advances and instant payouts
- Cash tips: tips handed over in cash can be recorded on a person's book, by the person (last 7 days) or by owners and managers, with a note. They carry into payroll files and statements.
- Cash advances: owners can give a team member an advance, paid back all at once or a set amount each pay period, from their NextUp payouts or through payroll. Advances are never taken from an employee's tips.
- Instant payouts: off until an owner turns it on. A team member with their own Stripe account can send what's available to their debit card in minutes from their book (at least 1 dollar, up to five a day). Stripe's 1% instant payout fee is owed by the person by default, or by the business.
Every change is logged. NextUp's money screens are records, not financial or tax advice.
