How a Customer Pays

  1. Open the paymentThe customer opens your pay link or QR code, or pays a booking deposit or an online gift card.
  2. Choose KlarnaOn Stripe’s secure page, they pick Klarna beside the card options.
  3. Split the cost with KlarnaThey confirm with Klarna, which sets their repayment terms.
  4. You are paidThe bill shows as paid and Stripe settles the payment to your Stripe account, less Stripe’s fee.

What You Do

  • An owner turns on “Pay over time (Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay, Zip, Sunbit)” in the Payment methods table on the dashboard’s Payments page. It is off until they do, and one switch covers all five.
  • Stripe has to allow the method for your business too. The table shows Stripe’s answer (Approved, In review or Not approved yet); until Stripe approves it, your pay pages offer only the methods Stripe accepts.
  • Klarna needs no hardware and no change to how you ring up a bill.
  • If Klarna is approved but Affirm, Afterpay, Zip or Sunbit is not, the table says so and only the approved ones are offered.

Good to Know

  • Klarna appears only when the payment is between $1 and $10,000.
  • A booking deposit paid with Klarna keeps no card on file for a no-show fee.
  • NextUp Walk-in’s card fee is worked out on these payments the same way as on card payments. Stripe’s own fee for them is higher than for cards and is on Stripe’s pricing page.
  • Klarna’s terms and any approval decision are Klarna’s and Stripe’s, not NextUp Walk-in’s.

Questions About Klarna

Does my business wait to be paid when a customer uses Klarna?

No. Your business is paid in full for the payment, and the customer repays Klarna.

Who can use Klarna?

Customers in the US paying in US dollars, within the smallest and largest amounts for Klarna: $1 to $10,000.

Can a customer use Klarna at the counter?

Not at a card reader or with Tap to Pay on Android. A customer can scan a QR code from your counter and pay on Stripe’s page.

Can Klarna pay a booking deposit?

Yes, once it is switched on. A deposit paid this way keeps no card on file, so you can’t charge a no-show fee to that payment.

What does Klarna cost?

Stripe sets its own fee for Klarna, and it is higher than for cards. See Stripe’s pricing page (https://stripe.com/pricing/local-payment-methods).

Why doesn’t Klarna show for one of my customers?

Klarna is not offered when the customer is outside the US, the payment is outside $1 to $10,000, you haven’t switched it on, or Stripe hasn’t approved it for your business yet.

Payments are processed by Stripe on your own Stripe account; NextUp Walk-in never holds your money. NextUp Walk-in’s card fee is 0.5% of card payments, never on tips, at most $1 a payment, on top of Stripe’s processing fee.
