How a Customer Pays

  1. Open the paymentThe customer opens your pay link or QR code, or pays a booking deposit or an online gift card.
  2. Choose ZipOn Stripe’s secure page, they pick Zip beside the card options.
  3. Confirm with ZipThey sign in and confirm with Zip, which sets their repayment terms.
  4. You are paidThe bill shows as paid and Stripe settles the payment to your Stripe account, less Stripe’s fee.

What You Do

  • An owner turns on “Pay over time (Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay, Zip, Sunbit)” in the Payment methods table on the dashboard’s Payments page. It is off until they do, and one switch covers all five.
  • Stripe has to allow the method for your business too. The table shows Stripe’s answer (Approved, In review or Not approved yet); until Stripe approves it, your pay pages offer only the methods Stripe accepts.
  • Zip needs no hardware and no change to how you ring up a bill.
  • If Zip isn’t approved yet, the table says so and your pay pages offer the methods that are.

Good to Know

  • Zip appears only when the payment is between $35 and $1,500, so it suits mid-sized bills, packages and gift cards more than a quick service.
  • A booking deposit paid with Zip keeps no card on file for a no-show fee.
  • NextUp Walk-in’s card fee is worked out on these payments the same way as on card payments. Stripe’s own fee for them is higher than for cards and is on Stripe’s pricing page.
  • Whether a customer can use Zip, and on what terms, is Zip’s decision.

Questions About Zip

Does my business wait to be paid when a customer uses Zip?

No. Your business is paid in full for the payment, and the customer repays Zip.

Who can use Zip?

Customers in the US paying in US dollars, for payments from $35 to $1,500.

Is Zip on the same switch as Klarna and Affirm?

Yes. “Pay over time” is one owner switch for Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay, Zip and Sunbit. Each one still has to be approved by Stripe for your business, and only the approved ones are offered.

Can Zip pay a booking deposit?

Yes, when the deposit is in range and the switch is on. A deposit paid this way keeps no card on file for a no-show fee.

Can I refund a Zip payment?

Stripe sets how long a Zip payment can be refunded, and its documentation lists the window. Check it there before you promise a customer a date.

What does Zip cost?

Stripe sets its own fee for Zip, and it is higher than for cards. See Stripe’s pricing page (https://stripe.com/pricing/local-payment-methods).

Payments are processed by Stripe on your own Stripe account; NextUp Walk-in never holds your money. NextUp Walk-in’s card fee is 0.5% of card payments, never on tips, at most $1 a payment, on top of Stripe’s processing fee.
