Being named by AI answer engines: a practical checklist for a walk-in shop

More people ask an assistant for “a barber near me with no wait” than type a search. Nobody can promise that an assistant names you. What you can do is make your shop easy to find, check and describe in the places those tools read.

Where answers come from

Assistants answer from web pages, business listings and review sites, and some can call live tools. Our own baseline in early October 2026 showed that round-up articles and software directories were named far more than any single company’s own site. For a shop, the equivalents are your Google profile, Apple Maps, Yelp, your website and your reviews.

Make every listing say the same thing

Same name, address, phone and hours everywhere. Add your join or booking link to your Google profile, your Apple Maps place card and your Yelp page. Get Found Online has the steps and tagged links for each, and counts bookings per source. See Google Business Profile for a walk-in shop.

Give them a live fact to quote

The wait is the thing an assistant cannot guess. A location with Wait times near you switched on appears on its town’s public page, and assistants that support MCP can connect to a public, read-only server to look up your wait, services and hours and return a link. Details are in getting found in ChatGPT and Claude. It cannot join a line or book; the customer confirms on your page.

Reviews and plain pages

Recent, specific reviews help any reader. Ask everyone, as in the review guide. On your site, write plain pages for each service with the price and the town in the title; the website builder adds a sitemap and robots.txt automatically.

Check once a month

Ask a few assistants your own questions from a logged-out browser, write down who is named, and repeat monthly. Results change and are not guaranteed.

Questions

Can I pay to be named?

No. Assistants choose what to show; listings, reviews and clear pages are what you control.

Does NextUp Walk-in put my shop in ChatGPT?

Not in directories yet. Assistants that support MCP can connect to the public server now.
