Passkeys: sign in to NextUp Walk-in with Face ID

A password plus a six-digit code is safe, but it is a lot of typing on a busy shop day. A passkey lets your phone or laptop confirm it is you with Face ID, a fingerprint or the device PIN, and NextUp Walk-in counts that as both steps of two-step sign-in.

What a passkey is

A passkey is a sign-in that lives on your device instead of in your head. When you sign in, your phone or laptop asks you to prove it is you with Face ID, a fingerprint or the device PIN, and that is all. There is nothing to type, nothing to forget and nothing a stranger can guess.

It is available on every plan, for owners, managers and team members who have their own email sign-in. The shared staff PIN on the floor screen works as it always has.

How to add one

Open your account settings and find the Passkeys section. Type a name you will recognize, like “My phone”, then choose Add a passkey and confirm on your device when it asks. You can add up to 10, so the phone in your pocket and the laptop at the front desk can each have one.

Adding a passkey needs a sign-in from the last 10 minutes. If it has been longer, NextUp Walk-in asks you to sign in again first, then brings you back to the same spot.

Next time, choose Sign in with a passkey on the sign-in page, or pick the passkey from your browser’s suggestion in the email box, and confirm on your device. To stop using one, remove it from the same section; that also signs you out of NextUp Walk-in on your other devices.

Why it counts as both steps

Two-step sign-in asks for something you know and something you have. A passkey already covers both: it only works on a device you own, and the device only unlocks it with your face, fingerprint or PIN. So a passkey sign-in is not asked for an authenticator code on top.

If you have turned on two-step sign-in, it is still on for every other way of signing in. A passkey does not switch it off; it is one more way through it.

The one exception

The platform admin area, used by NextUp Walk-in staff, still asks for the authenticator code even after a passkey. That is a stricter rule for the one place that can reach every business, and it does not affect your own dashboard.

On the website today

Passkeys work on the NextUp Walk-in website, in a recent browser on your computer or your phone. The iPhone and Android apps do not offer them yet; they are coming. Until then, use the website to add and use a passkey, and sign in to the apps the way you do now.
