Which device should run your waiting-room TV?

Any ordinary 4K TV can be the screen. What decides how good the display looks is the small device plugged into it. Here is how the options compare, from the premium pick to the ones to skip.

Best: Apple TV 4K with the NextUp app

The NextUp app for Apple TV runs the display natively, not as a web page, so motion is the smoothest and text is the sharpest of any option. It shows who is being called with a chime and their name spoken, who is next, the wait, your QR code and the weather, with live updates.

Open the app and it shows a six-character code; enter it under Locations → Connect a TV and it remembers the location. The screen never sleeps while the app is open, and it shifts a pixel or two every minute against burn-in. Get the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model so the TV can run on a cable instead of Wi-Fi.

The same display on every device: who is called, who is next, and the wait.

Fire TV Stick 4K Max: the low-cost pick

The cheapest way to get a good display today. Open it in Amazon Silk, the browser built into Fire OS: it is built on Chromium and uses the stick’s graphics chip, so animations stay smooth. It is Wi-Fi only, so keep the router close.

A NextUp app for Fire TV is coming soon. When it ships, the Fire TV Stick becomes a native option like Apple TV, and this post will say which models it supports.

Skip the Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025) and the 2026 Fire TV Stick HD for now. They run Vega OS, which has no web browser.

Roku: app coming soon

Roku has no web browser, so it cannot run the display today. A NextUp app for Roku is coming soon, which will make an inexpensive Roku stick, or a TV with Roku built in, a native option. Until it ships, plug one of the devices above into the TV’s HDMI port.

Google TV Streamer: the wired browser option

A faster processor than the Fire Sticks and an Ethernet port, running the display in its browser. A steady choice if you want a cable connection without Apple TV.

Skip the TV’s own browser

Smart TVs and “professional” commercial displays from Samsung, LG and others ship a built-in browser or URL launcher. These are usually years behind current browsers, so modern layouts, fonts and animations can render badly or stutter. They work as a fallback, but an Apple TV or a streaming stick in the HDMI port costs less than the difference and keeps the display current.

Chromecast won’t work: it only mirrors what a phone sends, and the picture freezes when that phone sleeps.

Quick pick

A premium look: Apple TV 4K with the NextUp app. Lowest cost today: Fire TV Stick 4K Max in Silk. A Roku TV already on the wall: wait for the Roku app, or plug in a stick. Every recommended device, with links, is on the equipment page.
