Barbershop management software: what to look for in 2026
Barbershop management software should run the chair, the line, the till and the payroll from one place. Here is what a barbershop actually needs it to do, in the order a shop feels the pain, and how to tell a real fit from a salon tool with a barber label.
The short answer
A barbershop needs five jobs covered: the walk-in line, bookings for regulars, checkout, barber pay, and numbers you can read. Most shops start with the line, because walk-ins are where a Saturday is won or lost, and add the rest as they grow.
The NextUp app covers all five. The walk-in line and lobby TV come first; bookings, memberships, commissions and booth rent come on the Pro plan.
The five jobs, in the order shops feel them
- The walk-in line. Clients join from a QR code or link with no app download, pick a barber or anyone, and see an honest wait. Without this, you are back to a paper sheet and a crowded door.
- Bookings for regulars. Booked times and walk-ins should share one schedule, so a booked client never waits behind a walk-in and a walk-in never takes a booked chair.
- Checkout. Cash, card, tips and a pay link, with the tip going to the barber who earned it.
- Barber pay. Commission, booth rent and advances worked out for you, so Friday is not a spreadsheet.
- Numbers. Walk-ins, average wait, walk-outs and the busiest hours, so you staff the chairs you need.

Questions that sort the real fits from the rest
Ask each vendor these before you pay.
Can a client join the line without downloading anything? Does the wait change with who is on duty and what service they want? Does the lobby TV cost extra? Is the price per barber, and what do you pay when you add the fifth chair? What is the card fee on top of the processor? Can you export your client list if you leave?
A tool built for a booked salon often fails the first two, because it assumes everyone has an appointment.
How the NextUp app handles it
One account, three plans. Walk-in is $29 a month for the first location and $19 for each extra. Pro is $59 and $39, and adds appointments and online booking, deposits, memberships, gift cards, loyalty, commissions, booth rent and email campaigns. Both include 3 barbers per location, then $10 a month each. There is also a Free plan: 1 location, 1 team member and 50 check-ins a month, and no card needed.

Start with the line, add the rest when you need it
You do not have to switch everything at once. Many shops put the line and the TV in first, keep their booking app for a month, and move bookings over once the line feels normal. Our waitlist checklist covers the line, and how to manage barbershop walk-ins covers the daily routine.
