Kiosk mode
Kiosk mode locks a device to a single screen so the public can use one function, such as checking in, without reaching anything else on the device.
Also called: self-service mode, guided access, locked tablet
A tablet is a general-purpose computer, which is a problem on a shop counter. Left alone, customers can leave the check-in form, open other apps, or change settings. Kiosk mode narrows the device to one purpose and keeps it there.
The lock is a feature of the device, not just the app. On an iPad it is called Guided Access, and on Android it is screen pinning. Both are protected by a passcode that only staff know, so a customer cannot swipe out.
Pair the lock with screen timeout set to never and a clear mount, and the result is a check-in point that needs no attention from staff for the whole day.
How NextUp Walk-in handles it
The check-in page for a location can run as a Door Tablet. The setup guide recommends locking the tablet to that screen with Guided Access on iPad or Screen Pinning on Android.
