Walk-in queue
A walk-in queue is the ordered line of customers who arrived without an appointment and are waiting to be served by the next available team member.
Also called: walk-in line, walk-in waitlist, drop-in line
The walk-in queue is the heart of a business with no required booking. Customers arrive when they like, get a place, and are served in order as people free up. A barbershop on a Saturday, a car wash after a rain, or a vet clinic with an urgent-care hour all run one.
The challenge is that demand is unpredictable. A quiet half-hour can turn into twelve people in five minutes. The queue absorbs that shock, as long as it is visible and its length is honest. When customers cannot tell how long they will wait, they guess, and many guess wrong and leave.
Running a good queue is mostly about three things: fast, simple joining, a realistic wait, and a clear way to call the next person. Everything else follows from those.
How NextUp Walk-in handles it
The walk-in line is the core of NextUp Walk-in. Customers join by phone or door tablet, staff manage the line from any browser on the Staff Screen, and the line can close automatically before closing time.
Questions
How do you manage a walk-in line?
Make joining quick, show an honest wait, call people in order, and remove those who have left. Software or a well-kept sheet can both do this.
