A Toast Tables alternative for barbershops and salons

Toast Tables is a restaurant reservation and waitlist product built on top of Toast POS — the dominant restaurant point-of-sale system. It comes up in waitlist searches because Toast has enormous brand recognition. The catch: Toast Tables is designed exclusively for restaurants, requires Toast POS hardware to function, and is currently in limited availability. If you run a barbershop, salon, nail bar, pet groomer, or any other walk-in service business that is not a restaurant, Toast Tables was never intended for you. Here is a practical look at what it is, what it costs, and what your actual options are.

What Toast Tables actually is

Toast Tables is a reservation and waitlist management add-on for Toast POS. It lets restaurant hosts manage reservations, a waitlist, and a floor plan from within the Toast ecosystem. The floor plan view, the wait list, and the text notifications are all built around a restaurant's table-service model: parties of two, cover counts, table turns, and dining durations.

It is a restaurant product in both design and availability. Toast Tables is sold as an add-on to Toast POS, which starts at $69 per month per location. You cannot purchase Toast Tables without first having Toast POS. The combined cost for a single location — Toast POS plus Toast Tables — starts at $119 per month before any hardware costs. Toast POS hardware (terminals, handhelds, card readers) typically runs $750 to $1,500 or more per location. Toast Tables itself is currently waitlist-only; not all regions or accounts have access.

Why it does not work for barbershops, salons, and service shops

Toast's entire platform is built around food service: menu items, table covers, checks, and tipping. None of that maps to a barbershop or salon. A walk-in service business does not have tables to manage, covers to count, or a dining duration to predict. The unit of service is a person in a chair, not a party at a table.

The hardware dependency is a larger problem. Toast POS requires proprietary terminals. Running a barbershop on Toast means buying hardware your shop has no use for, maintaining it, and paying monthly fees that subsidize features designed for a different type of business. For most walk-in service businesses, the all-in cost would be three to five times what a purpose-built queue management app costs, for a product that will not fit the workflow.

The current waitlist-only availability also means that even restaurants cannot reliably onboard. For a non-restaurant business, the practical answer is: Toast Tables is not an option.

What walk-in service businesses actually need

The core problem Toast Tables solves for restaurants — managing a line of people waiting for service — is exactly what NextUp solves for walk-in service businesses. Customers join the waitlist from their phone, a QR code on the door, or a door-facing tablet. They get a text when it is their turn. The staff screen shows who is waiting and who is next. A TV in the waiting area displays the queue.

The difference is that NextUp was built for service businesses where the customer is the unit, not the table. It supports stylist selection, service selection, custom intake questions, appointment booking, and loyalty programs — the things a barbershop, salon, or groomer actually uses. It runs on any browser-capable device you already own. There is no proprietary hardware, no POS subscription, and no minimum term.

Price comparison

Toast POS starts at $69/month per location. Toast Tables is an add-on, priced starting at $50/month per location, and is currently waitlist-only. Combined, that is $119/month minimum before hardware — and Toast POS hardware runs $750 to $1,500+ to get started.

NextUp starts at $29/month for a first location, includes 1,000 texts per month, a TV display mode, a door kiosk mode, service and stylist selection, appointment booking, and loyalty programs. There is no hardware to buy. For a single-location barbershop or salon, the total cost is roughly one-quarter of the Toast combination. See the full feature and price comparison here.
