# Walk-in queue app for alterations and tailor shops

Drop-offs, fittings and pickups, each in its own lane of one line.

Customers scan a code or tap your link, pick what they came for (a drop-off, a fitting, a pickup), and see their place and the wait on their phone. A hem drop-off takes two minutes at the counter and a wedding fitting takes thirty, so each reason counts for its own time. The tailor calls the next customer from any tablet or phone, and a TV by the front window shows who is up.

## What an alterations shop deals with today

Where the time goes today, before anything changes.

-

### A fitting that runs long holds the whole counter.

Someone is standing on the box with pins in the hem while three customers with a zipper repair wait at the counter. Nobody can tell the three how long it will be, because the answer depends on how the fitting goes. A bridal fitting with a bustle and a veil can run three times as long as the sleeve shortening before it, and the tailor cannot step away to explain. With a reason and a time for each, the phone shows a wait that already counts the long job in front.

-

### Drop-offs, fittings and pickups all share one door.

A drop-off needs a conversation about what to change and a quote. A fitting needs a free tailor, a mirror and a box to stand on. A pickup needs thirty seconds and a receipt. Treating them as one queue makes the quick ones wait for the slow ones, and it sends the person who only wanted to collect a finished jacket out the door in frustration. Three reasons with three times, and a rule about who takes which, keep the lanes apart even though the door is shared.

-

### Prom and wedding season stack everything on the same Saturdays.

Spring prom weeks, the bridal rush before a wedding weekend and back-to-school uniform fixes create days when the whole shop is fitting at once. A paper list becomes a pile of names with no order.

-

### The notes live on a pin cushion.

Take in the waist half an inch, shorten the sleeve to the wrist bone, leave the lining. Written on a ticket pinned to the garment, they get separated from the person who was in the shop when they were said. Two weeks later the customer returns for the final fitting and nobody remembers which side was pinned tighter.

-

### Event dates nobody wrote on the ticket.

A hem for Saturday’s wedding and a hem for no particular day are very different jobs, yet they look identical in a pile. When the date for the event is learned only at the counter, the rush order is discovered late. A question on the join form, such as “What date do you need it by?”, means the tailor knows before the customer is called, and can decide whether a walk-up fits today.

-

### Customers who wait in a cramped front room.

With a fitting room, a cutting table and a rack of finished garments, there is little space for waiting. The people standing by the racks are in the way of the people trying to get by.

## How NextUp Walk-in helps

What changes once the line lives on a phone, not on paper.

1

### Three kinds of visit, three lanes

Drop-off, fitting and pickup are separate reasons with their own times, so a pickup is not quoted like a bridal fitting.

2

### Wait next door, come back when called

Customers sit in the car or browse the shop next door while their place holds, and the front room has space for the person on the box.

3

### Notes that stay with the customer

Write what you measured and what to do next on the client record as a staff note, so the next person at the counter, or the next visit, starts with it. On the Pro plan, add a photo of the pinned garment, after the customer says OK, and it comes up when they are called back.

### Drop-off, fitting and pickup

Every plan

- **One reason per visit.** Your own list: hem and length, waist and fit, zipper or button repair, bridal or formal fitting, pickup. Each counts for its own time, and the tailor sees it before the customer reaches the counter.
- **Up to five questions on the join form.** Write them yourself, required or optional: which garment, what date it is needed by (prom, wedding, graduation), whether it is a first fitting or a final one. Customers type their answers on their phone, and they show on the row on the Staff Screen.
- **Who serves what.** Choose which team members take which reason, such as bridal fittings to your head seamstress and pickups to whoever is at the front. “Call next” skips visits a person is not on the list for.
- **Groups check in once.** A bride and her mother, or a parent with two children in uniforms, check in together, and each person gets their own place and reason.
- **Join from a phone, a QR code or a link.** Put the code on the front window for people walking by, and the link on your website and listing. Nothing to download.
- **A door tablet in kiosk mode** for customers without a phone. It never keeps one customer’s name or number for the next.

### Around the fitting

- **Wait anywhere nearby.** The phone shows the moment they are next. “Are you still coming?” checks on anyone who stepped out, and a no-show timer releases a spot if they do not answer.
- **Several team members, one line.** Each calls the next customer from their own screen, and the estimate counts how many are working.
- **Visit photos and “Last time” (Pro).** Up to 3 photos and a note per visit, added after the customer says OK to a photo: the pinned line, the measurement, what was left to do. It shows on the Staff Screen when they are called.
- **Client records** (every plan) with visit history and staff notes, so a returning customer’s measurements and preferences are one tap away. NextUp Walk-in does not have a measurement chart; you type them into the note.
- **Appointments beside the walk-in line (Pro).** Bridal and formal fittings can be booked, with confirmation and 24-hour and 1-hour reminders, while drop-offs and pickups stay walk-in.
- **Optional forms** signed before joining, for your own policies, such as the length of time you hold finished garments.

### Knowing your seasons

- **Insights:** visitors by weekday and hour, average wait, quoted versus real waits, people who left and a Monday summary email, so you can see when prom week and wedding weekend actually peak.
- **A service report** per team member and per reason: visitors served, average wait and time at the counter, so you can see how long fittings really take.
- **Best time to come today.** The Check-in Page shows the lowest expected wait by quarter-hour for the rest of today, so a customer with a flexible morning comes when it is quiet.
- **Hours, a cap and a no-show timer,** so the line opens, fills and closes on its own.
- **A private star rating after the visit,** then a Google review link for everyone who rates, to turn a happy wedding party into a review.
- **Seven languages** on customer screens: English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Haitian Creole and Simplified Chinese.

## Example day: the Saturday before prom with NextUp Walk-in

An example day, hour by hour, with the line on everyone's phone.

- 9:00 The shop opens. Nine people joined from the QR code on the window. Six ticked “fitting”, two “drop-off”, one “pickup”.

- 9:20 The head seamstress takes the first bridal fitting. The front team member takes pickups and drop-offs, which do not wait for the fitting to end.

- 10:30 A mother and two teenagers check in as a group. Each gets a place and a reason, and the “date needed” answer on each row shows all three are for the same weekend.

- 11:15 A customer returns for a final fitting. On the Pro plan her last visit’s note and photo come up when she is called: pinned in a half inch at the waist, hem left long.

- 12:30 Five people left to eat. They answer “Are you still coming?” with “15 minutes” and their places hold while the front room clears.

- 2:00 A pickup customer arrives while three fittings are in progress. The pickup reason is two minutes, so they are called between fittings.

- 3:10 A parent joins from the sidewalk with a school uniform skirt and answers “Monday” to the date question. The tailor sees it on the row, takes the hem as a drop-off between fittings, and the parent is back outside in five minutes.

- 4:30 The cap you set for the last hour stops new joins. Everyone already on the line is served.

- Monday The summary email shows Saturday 10 to 2 was the peak. The service report shows fittings ran longer than the time you set for them, so you raise that time for the next prom week and a second seamstress covers fittings.

Six screens, one system, always in sync — styled the way your customers and team will actually see it.

## Why switch to NextUp Walk-in

- **Moving off a notebook by the register?** Customers join from their phone, so the order is not a pile of names, and the wait they see matches the job.
- **Tired of quick pickups waiting behind fittings?** Each reason has its own time and you choose who takes it.
- **Space is tight in the front room?** Customers wait outside, in the car or next door and watch their place on their phone.
- **Need your measurements and notes in one place?** A note per visit sits on the client record and comes up when the customer is called.
- **Planning for prom and wedding season?** Insights show the real busy days, so you know when to add a seamstress.

## Alterations and tailor shops: common questions

Is there a waitlist app for alterations and tailor shops?

Yes. NextUp Walk-in is a virtual queue: customers join from their phone by scanning a code or tapping your link, pick drop-off, fitting or pickup, and watch their place live. The tailor calls the next customer from any tablet, laptop or phone.

Can drop-offs, fittings and pickups have different wait times?

Yes. Each reason you list counts for its own time, so a two-minute pickup and a thirty-minute fitting are not quoted the same. The wait a customer sees is based on how many are ahead for which reasons and how many people are working.

Can I take fittings by appointment and keep drop-offs walk-in?

On the Pro plan, yes. Appointments sit on the same line as walk-ins, with confirmation and 24-hour and 1-hour reminders, and a customer arriving for one can be set to go ahead of walk-ins. The Walk-in plan runs the walk-in line only.

Do customers have to download an app or make an account?

No. They join in their phone’s browser. A name is all they need.

Can I show a waiting-room TV in a small shop?

Yes. Any TV with a browser works, and there are apps for Apple TV, Roku and Fire TV. It shows who is up, who is next and the current wait, in your colors, so the person on the fitting box is not asked “how much longer?”.

Can customers wait outside or next door?

Yes. They watch their place on their phone, and the page shows the moment they are next. “Are you still coming?” checks on anyone who stepped out, and a no-show timer releases a spot if they do not answer.

Can I keep notes on each customer’s garment?

On the Pro plan you can add up to 3 photos and a note to each visit, after the customer says OK to a photo, and it shows on the Staff Screen when they are called. Every plan has client records. NextUp Walk-in does not track each garment through the shop.

Can my head seamstress take only the fittings?

Yes. Choose which team members take which reason, and “Call next” skips visits a person is not on the list for. A manual call is still allowed if you want to override it.

How do I handle prom and wedding season rushes?

Use hours, a cap and a no-show timer so the line fills and closes on its own, add questions such as the event date, and use Insights to see which days and hours actually peak. A Monday summary email shows what the week looked like. On the Pro plan, book formal and bridal fittings as appointments so the walk-in line is left for drop-offs and pickups, and the appointment visitors can be set to go ahead of walk-ins.

Can a group check in together?

Yes. A bride and her party, or a parent with several children, check in once as a group, and each person gets their own place and reason.

What if a customer does not have a smartphone?

Put a tablet in kiosk mode by the door. The kiosk never saves one customer’s name or number for the next. Staff can also add someone by hand, and you can print a numbered ticket.

Can customers join before they walk in?

Yes. The join link works from anywhere, so a customer can get in line from the car or from home, see the wait and arrive when their place is close. The Check-in Page also shows the lowest expected wait by quarter-hour for the rest of today.

Does it tell customers when their alterations are ready?

No. NextUp Walk-in runs the line at the counter. It does not track a garment through the shop, record measurements as a chart or send a ready-for-pickup notice. A customer picking up joins the line with the pickup reason, so that visit is short and counted separately. Keep your own system for the pickup date and the garment tag.

Can I print a ticket for the garment?

Yes, once you switch on the printed ticket for the location. The door tablet prints a slip with the number, people ahead, the estimated wait and a QR to the customer’s own place, through the browser’s print dialog on a receipt printer. It is a ticket for the line, not a tag for the garment.

How do I tell how long fittings really take?

The service report shows, per team member and per reason, visitors served, average wait and time at the counter, over 7 or 30 days, with a CSV download. Compare fittings with drop-offs, and set the time for each reason from what you see rather than a guess.

Can I use it for a small shop with one seamstress?

Yes. Set hours and a cap so the line does not fill while you are pinning a hem, and add walk-ups by hand from the Staff Screen. A door tablet in kiosk mode lets people join without interrupting you, and the estimate counts how many people are working. Customers who see a long wait can leave and watch their place from the car or next door instead of hovering at the counter while you work.
