# Queue management system

A queue management system is software, sometimes with screens and kiosks, that organizes customers waiting for service, shows their place and estimates their wait.

Also called: queue management software, QMS, waitlist software

A queue management system replaces the informal methods most shops start with: a clipboard, a mental list, a crowd by the door. At its core it does three things: it records who is waiting, it decides who is next, and it tells people where they stand.

Large versions, with ticket printers and numbered counters, run banks and government offices. For small businesses the useful version is lighter. Customers join from a phone, staff call the next person from one screen, and an optional TV in the waiting room shows who is up.

Judge a system by its everyday effects. Does it keep the quoted wait close to reality? Does it work when the wifi is slow? Does a new staff member learn it in a day? Features matter less than whether the line actually moves.
