# Call-up

A call-up is the moment a business tells the next waiting customer that it is their turn, by voice, a screen, a message or all three.

Also called: calling the next customer, call next, calling a customer

Every walk-in line ends in a call-up. Someone finishes a haircut, glances at the waiting area, and has to tell exactly one person to come over. The old way is shouting a name over the clippers, or squinting at a clipboard to see who was next.

A good call-up does three jobs. It identifies the right person with no ambiguity, it reaches them wherever they are waiting, and it records that they were called, so the clock for a no-show can start. A customer in the parking lot who never hears the name is a lost customer and a stalled chair.

Call-ups also set the pace of the whole floor. When the next call takes ten seconds instead of two minutes, the gap between customers shrinks, and over a day those gaps add up to real capacity.

## How NextUp Walk-in handles it

Staff press Call next on the Staff Screen, and only team members marked on duty are in that rotation. The customer sees the call on their phone, and the waiting-room TV shows who is being called. Spoken names and a full-screen spotlight are optional extras.
