# Booth rent

Booth rent is a fixed amount an independent stylist, barber or artist pays a shop owner to use a chair or station, instead of splitting each service with the owner.

Also called: chair rental, chair rent, station rent

In a booth-rent arrangement the person working the chair is an independent operator. They pay the shop a set amount, often weekly or monthly, and keep what they earn from their own clients. The shop owner collects rent rather than a share of each haircut.

The alternative is commission, where the owner keeps a percentage of every service and the worker is paid the rest. Booth renters carry more risk and keep more upside. Because their income depends on how many people they serve, how walk-ins are shared between renters becomes a real question, and it is the reason shops post a clear turn rule.

A shop can also mix both models: employees on commission in some chairs and renters in others. That makes the bookkeeping the hard part, because rent, product sales and tips all have to be tracked per person without mixing them up.

## Questions

What is the difference between booth rent and commission?

With booth rent the worker pays a fixed fee and keeps their service income. With commission the owner keeps a percentage of each service. Rent shifts income risk to the worker.

How do booth renters share walk-ins fairly?

Shops usually post a turn rule, such as a simple rotation, and honor requests for a specific person. A visible line removes most arguments.
