# Appointment vs walk-in

An appointment reserves a specific time in advance, while a walk-in arrives without booking and is served in line order when a team member is free.

Also called: booked vs drop-in, appointment-only vs walk-in

An appointment promises a time. The customer picks a slot, the business blocks that time on the calendar, and nobody else can take it. A walk-in promises nothing but speed of access: show up, join the line, and be served when your turn comes.

Each model solves a different problem. Appointments suit long, high-value work, like a color service or a tattoo session, where a no-show costs real money. Walk-ins suit short, impulse-driven visits, like a fade or a car wash, where customers decide minutes before they leave the house.

Most shops end up with a mix. A tattoo studio might book big pieces ahead and take flash walk-ins between them. The hard part is not choosing one model but keeping them from colliding, so a booked client does not wait behind a line and a walk-in is not told to wait for an hour that is already reserved.

## How NextUp Walk-in handles it

Walk-ins are the core of NextUp Walk-in. On the Pro plan, appointments and online booking sit beside the live line, and both kinds of visit are shown to staff in one place.

## Questions

Is a walk-in business better than an appointment business?

Neither is better in general. Walk-ins fit quick, low-commitment services and busy foot traffic. Appointments fit longer services where the customer wants a guaranteed time. Many shops offer both.

Can a shop take walk-ins and appointments on the same day?

Yes. The usual rule is that booked time is blocked on the calendar, so the wait quoted to walk-ins already accounts for it.
