American Express comes with card payments, the same as Visa, Mastercard and Discover. Customers can pay with it online on Stripe’s page, in the NextUp app and by tap or insert at the counter.

Fees

NextUp Walk-in’s card fee is 0.5% of card payments, never on tips, at most $1 a payment, on top of Stripe’s processing fee. Stripe’s pricing page lists its own fee.

Both. Online on Stripe’s secure page, at the counter on a reader or by phone.

## How a Customer Pays

- **Open the bill**The customer scans your QR code, opens a pay link or books and pays a deposit. At the counter, your team starts the charge.
- **Choose American Express**Online, they type in the American Express card or pick it from Apple Pay, Google Pay or Link. At the counter, they tap or insert it.
- **Add a tip if they like**Tips are chosen before the customer pays and are never charged the card fee.
- **The bill closes**The payment is processed by Stripe and recorded on the bill in NextUp Walk-in.

## What You Do

- Nothing. American Express comes with card payments, so there is no switch to flip.
- Connect your own Stripe account once; payments are processed by Stripe on your account.
- A pay link, QR code or the NextUp app needs no hardware. A Stripe card reader is optional.

- Stripe’s pricing page lists its fees for each card type.
- Samsung Pay works with American Express in person only, by tap. Online, Samsung phones pay with Google Pay.
- A customer can save a card for next time, so the front desk does not retype it.
- Tips are added to the card payment and never carry NextUp Walk-in’s card fee.

Do I need to turn American Express on?

No. American Express is part of card payments and is on for every business once Stripe is connected.

Can customers tap an American Express card at the counter?

Yes, on a Stripe S700 or M2 reader, or on an Android phone running the NextUp app with Tap to Pay on Android.

Is the fee higher for American Express?

NextUp Walk-in’s card fee is the same on every card. Stripe sets its own processing fee, and Stripe’s pricing page lists it.

Where is American Express accepted online?

On Stripe’s secure page for a pay link or QR code, a booking deposit and an online gift card.
